Best Time to Visit Cancun

The best time to visit Cancun depends on what you want from the water. The sea stays between 26 and 29 C all year, so swimming is never the problem. Wind, rain, sargassum and hurricane season are. This guide reads the year month by month from the 1991-2020 climate normals, then explains the nortes, hurricane season and the sargassum months, and what each one means for a boat day in the bay. If you are already set on a private boat, the Cancun yacht rentals comparison lists every charter with its real price and fees. The bookable charters are compared on all Cancun yacht rentals.

Quick answer The short answer

The best time to visit Cancun for calm water and dry weather is December through April, when rain falls on 3 to 8 days a month and the sea sits near 26 to 27 C. Cancun Trip Insider calls November through April the sweet spot for charters, with lighter trade winds and calmer seas. June to November is the official Atlantic hurricane season, peaking around 10 September. For the cheapest and quietest trip, aim for November, which one travel guide names among the best months for hotel deals.

Key takeaways

  • For a private boat day, December to April is the peak season on the water. A 55 ft yacht for up to 20 guests starts at $357.44 for the lowest-priced option, per boat: 55ft Luxury Yacht Charter.
  • The cheapest private entry point in the dry season is a 46 ft yacht for up to 15 guests from $250 for the lowest-priced option: 46ft Private Yacht Rental.
  • See how the platforms rank the months in the seasons and port closure section of the Cancun yacht charter comparison.
  • Sargassum peaks from late spring through summer on the east-facing beaches. The sargassum in Cancun guide tracks the semaphore and the cleanup effort.

Cancun Month by Month

One table, one source. All air and sea figures below come from the 1991-2020 climate normals published on Wikipedia's Cancun page, which gives the mean daily maximum, monthly rain and rainy days for every month, plus a sea temperature line.

Air, Sea and Rain for All 12 Months

The figures in this table come from a single source, the 1991-2020 normals table on Wikipedia's Cancun page, so the months are comparable. The sea column follows the same page, which puts the ocean at about 26 C in winter and 29 C in summer, kept warm by the Yucatan current. The on-the-water column reads the same table plus the charter guides that comment month by month.

Cancun's annual mean temperature is 27.1 C, and sea breezes keep most afternoons below 36 C. The Hotel Zone runs about 1 to 2 C cooler than the airport because it is surrounded by ocean. Annual rainfall in the same table is about 1,300 mm over roughly 99 rainy days, with October the wettest month at 242.1 mm and April the driest at 37.1 mm.

The Dry Season and the Best Boat Months

The dry season runs from roughly November or December through April, and it lines up with what the booking platforms call peak season. Getmyboat gives December through April as the peak boating season on Isla Mujeres. Sailo widens the window to mid-November through mid-June and names April and December as optimal. Cancun Trip Insider names November to April, with lighter trade winds and calmer seas. Put the three together and you get two windows the sources actually back: the core December to April dry season, and the shoulder that stretches from mid-November into June.

Rain is only half the story. A snorkel guide advises booking morning departures because wind builds after 11:00, which matters in every month but especially when a norte is due. Sunshine peaks from March to May at 254 to 267 hours a month, so spring combines the driest air with the longest bright days. If you want calm water, Sailo names April and December as the optimal months, and the Cancun yacht rentals compared list every charter.

Nortes, Hurricanes and Sargassum

Three seasonal forces shape a boat day in Cancun. Two of them have official calendars. The third does not.

The Nortes, November to March

Nortes are winter cold fronts that sweep down from the Gulf of Mexico, bringing strong north or northwest wind for one to four days. The norte season runs roughly from November to March, with a front arriving every week or two at the peak from December to February. Quintana Roo counts its cold front season from September to May, with the most notable episodes from December to March. A front shows up in 5 to 7 day forecasts but cannot be predicted months ahead, so build one flex day into any winter trip.

The wind flips which water is calm. During a norte the bay side of Isla Mujeres and the Bahia de Mujeres turn choppy, while the east-facing Hotel Zone beaches are often calmer. Two private options in the list are the Isla Mujeres Private Yacht, a 4-hour run at $720 per group for up to 6 guests at the listed price, and the Private Sailing Tour from $549.34 for the lowest-priced option. A front arrives as stronger wind first, then showers or drizzle, then cooler air.

Hurricane Season, 1 June to 30 November

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the climatological peak on 10 September and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. An average season brings 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes. Cancun's own history includes Hurricane Gilbert in September 1988 and Hurricane Wilma, which crossed Cozumel late on 21 October 2005 as a Category 4 and reached the mainland near Puerto Morelos about six hours later, dropping 1,633.98 mm of rain on Isla Mujeres in 24 hours and damaging 110 hotels in Cancun.

For a day trip the practical risk is not a direct hit but the closures around it. The Cancun Capitania de Puerto closes the port to vessels under 40 ft when wind and waves pass its limits, as it did after southerly winds of 43 to 45 km/h with gusts of 58 km/h and waves of 0.90 m. Most listings on this site offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. September and October are the two months where that flexibility matters most.

Sargassum, Late Spring Through Summer

Sargassum is the wildcard, because the state government itself says it is no longer strictly seasonal. The pattern in recent years still holds: arrivals build from late spring, and the 2025 collection peaked from June to August with July the heaviest single month at 18,419 tons. A snorkel guide reports the seaweed affecting the east-facing coast mainly from May to August.

Winter remains one of the lowest-sargassum times of the year, which is one more reason the dry season wins for beach days. For a boat day, check the daily semaphore before you go, since a private yacht from the lagoon marinas takes 30 to 40 minutes to reach Isla Mujeres. The full semaphore, tonnage counts and beach by beach detail live in the sargassum in Cancun guide.

The BEST Time of Year to Visit Cancun

A traveller breaks down Cancun's seasons, weather and crowds. Third-party video by Eric The Traveler. This site did not shoot it and has no relationship with the creator.

Busy Weeks, Quiet Weeks

Crowds in Cancun follow school calendars more than weather. The sea stays warm all year, so the busiest weeks are the weeks people are off work.

Spring Break and Semana Santa

One travel guide places spring break crowds in March and April, and the SEP school calendar sets the 2027 Semana Santa break from late March to early April. Both periods bring crowds. The marine sector feels it too.

In one spring break port closure, Puerto Juarez was shut to vessels under 40 ft while larger vessels could still run, with southeast winds of 26 to 28 km/h and waves of 0.91 m. Asociados Nauticos de Quintana Roo said the fleet was working at about 70 percent of capacity that week. Book any water day well ahead if you travel in these weeks.

Christmas and New Year

High season runs from late December to April, with airfare and hotel rates rising around Christmas and New Year's Eve. The SEP winter break runs from late December into early January, which adds Mexican family travel on top of the international wave. For a boat day this means two things.

Sailo names December as one of the optimal months for the water. If you want a private boat in the holiday weeks, reserve early. The 55ft Luxury Yacht Charter, for example, is $357.44 per group for the lowest-priced option and takes up to 20 guests.

The Quiet Months

Low season runs from May through October, and April, May, November and December are the shoulder months. The same guide names October and November as the best months for hotel deals and says September has very light crowds. There is a trade-off.

September and October sit inside the hurricane risk window and are also the two wettest months, with October at 242.1 mm and September at 223.1 mm of rain. If you want empty beaches and do not mind watching the forecast, this is when to go to Cancun on a budget.

Crowds at a Glance

This table lines up the crowd pattern from the travel guide with the rainfall figures from the 1991-2020 climate normals, so you can see what quiet weeks cost you in weather risk.

When to Book a Boat Day

The month matters less than the hour of the day and the wind forecast. Here is how each season treats a charter.

Book the Morning

A local snorkel guide advises morning departures because the wind builds after 11:00. That rule matters most in the nortes from November to March, when cold fronts push strong north or northwest wind for one to four days at a time. A norte shows up in a 5 to 7 day forecast but cannot be predicted months ahead, so keep one flexible morning in your plan.

During a norte the Bahia de Mujeres turns choppy while some east-facing Hotel Zone beaches go calmer.

Port Closures Are Real

The Cancun Capitania de Puerto closes the port to small vessels when wind and waves cross its limits. In one closure it banned vessels under 40 ft after southerly winds of 43 to 45 km/h, gusts of 58 km/h and waves of 0.90 m. Closures are announced by bulletin through the Autoridad Maritima Nacional and on VHF channel 16.

If the port closes on your day, read the cancellation line before you pay. Most listings compared on the Cancun yacht rentals homepage offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

Which Season Suits Which Boat

Sources disagree on the single best charter season. Cancun Trip Insider favors November through April for lighter trade winds, Sailo picks mid-November to mid-June with April and December optimal, and Nauty360 says seas are calmer from May to November. The full month-by-month breakdown sits in the seasons section of the Cancun yacht rentals homepage.

Isla Mujeres lies about 13 km offshore, so the crossing is the part of the day that wind affects most.

SeasonWater stateBest pick
December to AprilDry, nortes possibleFull-day Isla Mujeres runs
May to AugustWarm sea, wetter from JuneMorning sails and snorkel stops
September to OctoberSqualls, wettest monthsShort morning charters only
NovemberShoulder, nortes startFlexible morning bookings

Charters That Fit the Calendar

In the dry season, the Isla Mujeres Private Yacht runs a 4-hour day with hotel pickup from $720 per group for up to 6 guests. In the hotter months, the Private Sailing Tour offers 4 to 8 hours on a 40 or 50-foot monohull from $549.34 for the lowest-priced option, with a snorkel stop and snacks included. Anglers should aim at the spring window, since the fishing season is described as starting in March with sailfish and marlin through spring and summer, and the Private Fishing Charter takes 6 anglers out for 2 to 8 hours from $399, plus licenses at $10 per person.

Timing Tips, Do and Don't

Do

  • Do book morning departures, because wind builds after 11:00.
  • Do keep one flexible day in your itinerary during November to March, because a norte brings strong wind for one to four days and appears only 5 to 7 days out.
  • Do ask the operator about dock and park fees, because sources quote 10 to 25 USD per person and say they are usually paid separately in cash.
  • Do plan a whale shark trip between mid-May and mid-September if that is your goal, because the official season is 15 May to 17 September and peaks in mid-summer.
  • Do check the marine park rules before a reef stop, because the park requires a vest, bans touching or feeding species and bans anchoring in seagrass.

Don't

  • Don't assume the wet season ruins a trip, because rain arrives as brief afternoon showers much of the time and the sea stays at 28 to 29 C through summer.
  • Don't book a fixed-price nonrefundable party boat in hurricane season, because the average Atlantic season brings 14 named storms and most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October.
  • Don't count on the east-facing Hotel Zone beaches in a norte without checking, because the bay side turns choppy even while some east-facing beaches calm down.
  • Don't schedule a sargassum-sensitive beach week from late spring through summer without reading the daily semaphore, because the critical period has run from June into September.
